Since the civil war in Nepal 10 years ago where 13,000 people were killed, the children have been the main victims. Most of us were fortunate enough to fly and afford a secure future in United Kingdom. But consequently, we also created that vacuum which the children were forced to fill. Cases where they have been abused, killed, illegally detained, tortured, and raped are uncountable.
- Nearly 50% of all the 5 year old children in Nepal are malnourished.
- Malnutrition being, the underlying cause of 70% of deaths under the age of five.
- Nearly 27% of children are sold into child labor.
- Less than 50% of the Nepalese population is literate. The literacy rate among women is 29.9% only.
"In the blink of an eye, we can all make a difference."- Maggie Doyne. The founder of Kopila Valley Children's School in Surkhet cares for 40 orphan children. Our aim of the event was to work together with leaders who believe that we youths care and we can make a difference to the lives of these children. We wanted a mass to join us and be a part of Maggie's hopeful mission to meet children's basic requirements. We planned to send 100% of the net money raised to provide resources required in the school.
Alongside with our ambassador Dr Chalise, it was a privilege to receive generous support from president of following organisations: Tamu Dhee London Branch, Tamu Pyelhu Sangh, Gorkha Zilla Samaj UK, Gorkha Welfare Society, Gorkhali Zilla Tamu Samaj UK and Thakali Samaj . Aadibashi Janajati Mahasangh UK, Tamudhee Association and Kirat Sunuwar Welfare Society also contributed financially although they were unable to attend the programme. We also had equal participation from youth led organisations like GMIN UK, Koseli UK, Live for Change, Maiti Nepal UK, Tamudhee Youth Team and Gurkha Welfare Society Youth Club.
The fundraising programme "Beauty with a purpose" which was held on 23rd December at South Harrow was a success. The guests, volunteers and performers present were massively supportive and truly there for the Kopila Valley kids. The programme itself was filled with positive spirit from performers , DJ, photographers to the volunteers who helped with catering, food preparation and decoration. Miss UK Nepal 2011 Team managed to raise just over £3000. It has been decided that the fund will be used towards the extension of the school. We will be providing an evidence to the public once the money has been received by the right people and right place.
